Monica Sheppard left the Atlanta suburb of Tucker, GA to come to college in Rome and loved it so much that she never left. In her 30+ years as a Rome resident, Monica has worn many different hats including nature/landscape/adventure photographer, caterer, marketer, graphic designer, beekeeper and writer, to name a few. She is currently working as a graphic designer and writer, and working on a new project on Broad Street.

Monica’s love for the Rome community has made it easy for her to get involved with many different nonprofits and projects over the years. She has served on the boards of the Sexual Assault Center of Northwest Georgia, Claws for Paws, Empty Bowls and Makervillage. She is past Vice President and a long-time supporter of the Coosa River Basin Initiative and is currently serving as the Vice President of the Rome International Film Festival, an organization she has worked with for most of its 15 years. She is a founding member and Vice President of the Rome Floyd Beekeepers Association and co-president of the Bee City USA, Rome board.

She has co-directed the Chiaha Harvest Fair for about 15 years, where she started out as an exhibiting artist with her former husband, selling their photographs from long-distance hiking on the Appalachian Trail and a 100-day journey following the Chattahoochee and Apalachicola Rivers from the spring to the Gulf of Mexico in a canoe.

Along with her friends and daughter in the BeeShees, Monica has kept bees for 10 years and has been known to carry bees and bee stuff to numerous classrooms, garden clubs and civic clubs to talk about the importance of bees and pollinators in our environment. “Save the bees!” is her mantra, and she never gets tired of saying it.

That intense passion for all that is good about Rome, GA led Monica to run a nearly successful campaign for a seat on the Rome City Commission in 2017. She looks forward to running again in the future and plans to be even more successful in her bid for Prom Queen at the 2019 A Night to Remember: An Adult Prom!
